Painting is something that has always been therapeutic for Rebekah Reuser, especially in the refined form of encaustic: painting with wax.

“Painting serves as my tool and instrument to examine my feelings,” says Reuser, “and express special views on my own life.”
Her work is an ongoing experiment with the relationship between colours and shapes, sometimes culminating in feelings of tension and opposition.

Scraping and gouging through the layers of encaustic wax to reveal the final image allows Reuser to delve into past experience or scrutinize recent thoughts and dreams. She removes and reapplies the material to create texture and depth, imbedding objects within layers to represent emotional, personal and sometimes painful subjects.

Rebekah, who worked at the DAG during the summer of 2005, received her Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in Mississauga in a joint program with Sheridan College for Fine Art and Fine Art History in 2008.
