| POSTSCRIPTS ~ Quilts Along the Way of Life November 26 - January 18, 2004 Women have gathered together for hundreds of years to quilt, share their stories and make bed coverings that were both functional and beautiful. The
Oatstraw Quilters are a group of five local women:Lillian Burgess, Pat
Carson, Dyan Jones, Heather Lee and Mary MacCarl who have been doing
just that for a number of years. Each woman, in turn, designs and sews
a quilt top which is then quilted by the group. The quilt begins with
an idea that must be translated into cloth using colour, shape and the
three-dimensional quality of the quilting stitches. Completing each
quilt is a long, slow process which means that it reflects a slow unfolding
in the life of both the individual who created it as well as the group
who completed it together. Each work is therefore both one woman's artistic
vision and a group work. These works in cloth are postcards along the way of life. They signify a portion of a woman's experience presented to be read by many as private, public, analogous and simple-textured truths. Join us for an afternoon of harp music, storytelling and quilting with special guest harpist Mary Anderson on Sunday, January 18 at 2:00 pm. |
