Alana Range

Seven Local Women Photographers direct the camera lens towards the figure. Whether this be the self, the family, the friend, the peer group, the community or the popular cultural icon, the gaze is upon the familiar. This show follows last year's exhibition "The Intimate Eye" which showcased the work of seven men, local photographers also directing our gaze to the figure.

The seven photographers ranging in age from eighteen to sixty-five come to the figure from different vantage-points with a wealth of perspectives. The work ranges from the intimacy of family and the childhood years, the family snapshot {the device that records the ephemeral}, to the self-portrait, that most enigmatic and troubling of photo-subjects. Perceptions of who we are, who we want to be, as well as so many other subtle distinctions surrounding identity imbue these images and pose and juxtapose those questions of identity to and for the viewer.
